Calling

Gardens in the sand
2010

translated by Ravi Shankar

I spent all my life
In this hotel
Waiting for you to arrive.

Without a house of my own.

Without a room for my friend.

Listening to the radiator buzz
Eating like a thief, drinking beers.

People came to see me but I refused
In case you called.

I spent nights silent, talking to you.
Acting out our encounters in my mind,
I became a director of the skies.

Your absence alone made me
Bear this existence.

Now I aim my viewfinder at a clear blue shot.
I want it empty of hurricanes, of birds

Yet some cloud persists. Blots the sight.
