The poem

The naked piazza
2000

translated by Nicholas Kostis

“The Ephebe of Antikythera,” an old-fashioned
poem that a girl is preparing to recite at an evening
poetry reading. “She has already announced the title,
but the microphone is not properly adjusted. The
young sound engineer leaps onto the stage and fixes
it. The girl glances at him, but when it is time for the
poem, she is no longer in the mood. So what if it is
about the ephebe of Antikythera?” That seems stale to
her. But the hunk who darted in front of her is blaz-
ing with youth and beauty. He is the poem.
